"Life is just a party, and parties are meant to last" sang Prince in his song 1999 - well Prince is still going strong some 36 years after his first album was released and on Friday night the party rolled back into Manchester (for the 2nd time this year!) - and judging by Friday nights show the party is still going strong! Prince certainly has his mojo on (probably enhanced by the big afro he currently has).
Backed by an excellent all female band (3rd Eye Girl) Prince takes to the Arena stage at 8.30pm and relentlessly plays hit after hit for over 2 hours. Opening with the suitably titled

'Lets Go Crazy" and the crowd immediately responds accordingly. In fact throughout the duration of the show the audience are very responsive to the legend they have come to see. Prince fully appreciates this and loves to get his audience involved encouraging them to clap, sing, shout & wave their hands about - he clearly relishes in a good dose of audience participation.
One thing Prince isn't so keen on is people using mobile phones to record or take pictures during his gigs - a small army of "phone police" security are constantly on the look out for anyone trying to take a picture & are quick to shine bright flashlights in the faces of those who do - something that made me smile considering Prince is playing at the "Phones 4 U" arena.
During the show Prince struts, grins, poses, screams & dances about like an over excited child, he even pogos at one point - he is clearly having a great time. One thing that does strike you throughout all this is how talented a musician he really is (sometimes this can be overlooked by the showmanship) at times he seems to summon the spirits of James Brown & Jimi Hendrix - he really is quite remarkable, and I for one am very impressed. He plays all the songs you could wish for including "Kiss", "Raspberry Beret", "When Doves Cry", "Diamonds & Pearls", "Guitar", "1999", "Little Red Corvette" & finishes with a rousing "Purple Rain".
Tonight Manchester was invited to the Prince party and loved every minute of it giving Prince an almighty cheer when he asked "is Manchester the funkiest city in England?" - it is thanks to Prince being here! To which he nods and agreed "That's what they told me!"
