Chicago based, dreampop extraordinaire, Lykanthea, released the collaborative EP alongside Savage Sister in January this year. The Sundrowned EP is Lykanthea’s first release, in advance of a full length album, due out later this year.
Admittedly, this genre of music is not really to my taste. However, the ambience of this EP is seductive. With lengthy instrumentals, drones, and laidback progression, these tracks are almost hypnotic. The choir-like vocals flow effortlessly throughout each track and the originality of this experimental work of art is remarkable.
The opening track, Glass Orchids, is a perfect introduction. Much like the title, this short track feels delicate. The brief innocence of the track sets the scene perfectly for the duration of the EP, and speaks volumes alone.
The tracks, Naked, Orphan Wild, and Diving cannot lyrically be decrypted. The haunting vocals are enticing, as though the eerie voice is summoning you. The tracks seamlessly fuse into one another, complimenting each other flawlessly. The highlight of the EP for me is Orphan Wild. This track has more of a definitive progression, building various layers, and an elegant synth sound.
I’d be slightly inclined to put this EP under the ‘background music’ category; by that I mean that these tracks would be more suited to being played at home whilst lounging around, rather than at a party or performed live. That said, the fluidity and elusive nature of the tracks are to be admired. Lykanthea has created something quite beautiful and unique.
